Description

Wester Cowden Farmhouse is an early 19th century, two-storey gabled farmhouse that features a piend-roofed addition from the mid-19th century on the east side and a later 19th century gabled addition on the west elevation, effectively doubling the original structure. The north elevation is harled, while the other elevations are constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The eaves and base courses on the west side are notable, along with painted margins, some of which are raised.

The west elevation, dating from the later 19th century, has three bays. At the center, there is a pilastered doorpiece with a cornice and blocking course, featuring a panelled door and a three-pane fanlight, along with an encaustic tiled vestibule floor. The outer bays have canted windows at ground level, which have stop-chamfered margins, cornice, and blocking course. The first floor has regular fenestration with a smaller window at the center.

The north elevation has an M-gable to the right, with a window on the first floor to the right and a ground-level window at the center to the left. There is another window at ground level and one on the first floor to the right of the right gable, along with a cill course at the first floor. The left gable also features a window at both ground and first floors.

The south elevation is also M-gabled, with a window at ground and first floors to the left of the left gable and a cill course at the first floor. There is a door to the left and a window at the first floor to the left of the right gable, with a modern glasshouse attached to the left and center.

The east elevation, from the early 19th century, has three bays and features a small pilastered doorpiece with a cornice and an angled tablet above at the center, along with a panelled door. The fenestration is regularly disposed with varying sizes at both ground and first floors. The mid-19th century piend-roofed addition on the right has two bays, with a door to the right and a small window flanking it, along with regular fenestration at both levels and a window at ground level to the left of the left return.

The farmhouse largely has a 12-pane glazing pattern in the sash and case windows, with 4-pane windows on the north side. The building features coped skews, rubble stacks with gableheads to the north and south, and a tall wallhead at the re-entrant angle to the south, all covered with grey slates. Some original rainwater goods remain.

The steading consists of piend-roofed single-storey rubble ranges running north-south to the west, along with a single-storey rubble building to the southeast, which has a window to the left and a door to the right on the north side, featuring coped skews and slightly swept eaves.
