Description

9 Ralston Road is a villa built around 1890, with an early 20th century addition. This two-storey building features a plain Greek revival style, constructed from cream sandstone that is squared and snecked, with a battered ashlar base course and a lintel/eaves band at the first floor. The windows have block cornices.

On the south elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay to the right, which includes a five-light bowed window with a block cornice at the ground floor and a corniced bipartite window above it, featuring a corbelled lintel. To the left, a corniced tripartite window is set in a recessed bay, also with a corbelled lintel, and a bipartite window is located at the first floor. The doorway is in a narrow recessed bay to the outer right, featuring a round-arched opening in an advanced, corniced panel. A billiard room addition is set back further to the outer left.

The north elevation includes a ground floor window to the outer right and another window above that is out of line. There is a lean-to service projection at the ground level in the center and left, with a door flanked by barred windows. A stair window is located in the center of the first floor, showcasing a decorative border glazing pattern. The billiard room extension to the outer left has a piend roof and narrow windows flanking a wallhead stack. The villa features timber plate glass sash and case windows, timber bracketed eaves, and a roof covered in grey slates with pitched and piended sections. The wallhead stacks are coped in ashlar.

Inside, the original villa has a plain decorative scheme, including a severe timber chimneypiece and simple plaster cornices. The billiard room features timber wainscot, a shallow segmental vaulted ceiling, scrolled plasterwork detail on the wallhead frieze, and decorative stained glass windows.
