Description
Dated 1906 and built by Matthew Henderson of Drumchapel, this is a two-storey and attic tenement building with shops and offices at ground level, situated on a U-shaped plot. The building features ogee-roofed polygonal turrets, gables, and piended dormers. It is constructed of stugged sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings, incorporating a ground floor frieze and cornice, a moulded eaves course, pedimented doorpieces, canted oriel windows, tabbed cills, and stone mullions.
The west elevation, facing Drymen Road, is nearly symmetrical with twelve bays above ground level. While the ground floor largely features modern shop fronts, the penultimate bay to the left (number 114) retains an inset door and a traditional display window. Numbers 104 and 108 flank a broken-pedimented doorpiece with a modern door. The first floor’s central bays include two canted windows below gables with a single window above, while the flanking bays have two single windows and dormers. The bays further to the right are also gabled, with one featuring a canted window below a window in the gablehead, and another with a single window to each floor. The penultimate bay to the right has a single window below a dormer, and the bay to its left has a raised chimney breast bearing a cartouche with the initials 'MH' and the date '1906'. The angled outer bays are canted, breaking the eaves into a tall attic floor with a finialled ogee roof.
The north elevation, facing New Kirk Road, mirrors the Drymen Road elevation in its details of doors, windows, and gables. The left side has eight symmetrical bays with doors in bays two and seven, varied shop openings, and regular first-floor fenestration, including canted windows in bays one, four, five, and eight. The right side has four bays above ground level with a central ground-floor door and modern flanking shops. A gabled bay is positioned to the left with a canted window, and three bays to the right feature single windows at first floor level, with dormers above.
The south elevation, facing Roman Road, echoes the details of the Drymen Road elevation in its doors, windows, and gables. It has modern shops at ground level, canted bays flanking the centre at the first floor, and a cartouche with 'NEWKIRK' on the outer left chimney breast. An ogee-roofed turret with stylised fluted pilasters is situated to the outer right.
The rear elevations, overlooking the courtyard, display a variety of elements on altered surfaces, including bipartite windows and stair windows with decorative astragals and coloured glass.
Most windows have a largely 4- and 6-pane glazing pattern over 2-pane in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered in grey slates, with coped ashlar stacks, ashlar-coped skews, cast-iron downpipes, and dated decorative rainwater hoppers.
