Description

Dated 1902, 6 Roman Road is a finely-detailed, two-storey, eight-bay Jacobethan house incorporating Arts and Crafts interior detailing. The house is harled with sandstone ashlar dressings, quoins, strips, and some raised margins, with accompanying cill courses. Stone-pedimented windowheads are present, along with moulded keystones, stone transoms, and mullions.

The north (principal) elevation features a projecting gabled bay to the right of centre, with a raised step leading to a roll-moulded doorpiece featuring the date '1902'. The doorpiece has a decoratively-pedimented head with barley-twist pilasters framing a cartouche bearing the 'DJS' monogramme. It abuts a widely-spaced bipartite stair window and a heraldic shield within a stone panel in the finialled gablehead. A single window with coloured glass is located immediately to the left at ground level. Asymmetrically-disposed windows are found to the right return and outer right bay. Two bipartites (one with coloured glass) are present with a single window beyond at ground level, and three first-floor windows break the eaves into shaped pediments with relief-carved rose, thistle, and shamrock motifs. An advanced, conically-roofed, tower-like bay is positioned to the left, with a window on each floor, and another window to the right return. A single-storey bay is set-back to the outer left.

The west elevation is gabled, featuring a window at first floor level and a conical-roofed bowed bay, consistent with the south elevation. The south (garden) elevation is seven bays wide, showcasing broad tripartite windows on each floor within conical-roofed bowed bays clasping the outer angles. The centre bays feature pedimented windowheads projecting through the eaves, each with a six-light transomed window at ground level; the window to the right is within a flat-roofed canted bay. Regular fenestration is present on the remaining bays, with a coloured-glass window to the ground floor left. A single-storey, piended bay is set-back to the outer right.

The east (Horse Shore Lane) elevation is gabled, featuring a window to the right at first floor, above a piended single-storey projection.

The windows feature small-pane glazing patterns, some over plate glass lower sashes, all within timber sash and case frames. Art Nouveau style leaded coloured glass is also present. The roof is covered in grey slates. Brick-coped harled stacks include a full complement of cans. Ashlar-coped skewes incorporate moulded skewputts, some finialled. A cast-iron cockerel finial tops the tower at the northeast corner, and animal head carvings adorn the mouldings at the base of the stacks.

The interior retains a fine decorative scheme, including decorative plasterwork cornicing and carved timber fire surrounds with overmantels incorporated into panelling. A timber-panelled stairhall features a circular Art Nouveau style glass panels to some inner doors, a keystoned ashlar fireplace, a timber-balustered dog-leg staircase, and square newels with open carved tops. A first-floor bedroom includes a timber fire surround, overmantel, and early Art Deco style glazed ceramic tiles.

Boundary walls are ashlar-coped with ball-finials, along with harled quadrant walls featuring inset stone balusters. Ball-finialled, square-section ashlar gatepiers support decorative ironwork gates. Additional boundary walls are constructed of brick with glazed terracotta tile coping.
