Description
The War Memorial on Roman Road in Bearsden was designed by Alexander Proudfoot in 1924. It is a stepped, three-stage, rectangular-plan structure made of sandstone ashlar. At the top, there is a statue of a winged figure supporting a dying man.
The memorial features a simple base with a concave-moulded top, leading to a reduced battered second stage. This stage includes bronze plaques that display the Roll of Honour, inscribed with the words: "IN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF FROM THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 and THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945."
A decorative dark band near the top of the second stage transitions to the bronze figure, which is winged and draped, cradling the dying man, who is depicted wearing only a loincloth.
