Description

Victoria Buildings, located at 57-65 King Street in Kilmarnock, is a three-storey and attic, five-bay residential and commercial property designed by Thomas Smellie in 1901, showcasing a Flemish Renaissance style. The ground floor features a modern shop front, while the upper section has a near-symmetrical design, highlighted by a corbelled polygonal tower on the right and a moulded string course at the second floor. The main elevation is constructed of red Ballochmyle stone, with red brick on the side elevation.

The principal elevation displays a modern shop front at the ground floor, with a near-symmetrical arrangement on the first and second floors. The centre features two bipartite windows on both floors, accented by an overhanging eaves cornice and flanked by stepped pyramidal caps. Above this, there is a modern attic extension. To the left, a semi-elliptical two-storey bay has a single window in the gablehead above, topped with a Flemish gable that includes attached Ionic columns, a frieze, and a cornice, all joined by a large arch. The right side mirrors this with bipartite windows on the first and second floors, and a half-gable above with a single window and an arched ornamental frame. The polygonal tower on the far right features single windows at the first floor on both the main elevation and the right return, framed by attached Ionic columns that support the corbelling. The tower has single windows on each plane at the second floor, mock machicolations above, and additional single windows on the second and fourth planes at the attic level, with bracketed eaves and a finial crowning the roof.

The side elevation includes a gabled wall with tripartite windows on the first and second floors, as well as in the attic, and a single-storey extension at the rear. The ground floor has modern glazing, while the upper floors feature two-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has straight skews. The interior was not seen in 2001.
