Description

Lainshaw House is a largely early to mid-19th century Classical mansion, with some earlier elements. It was converted into flats in 2008. The building is asymmetrical, three stories high, and features six bays across the front and three bays on the sides, with Tudor-Gothic details. To the north, there is a later four-bay Gothic single-storey and attic wing, and at the rear, an 18th-century three-storey, two-bay rubble section is incorporated. The exterior is made of cream sandstone ashlar with raised margins, and includes a cill course, cornice, and blocking course. The upper storey windows have hoodmoulds, while some ground floor windows have segmental arches.

On the principal east elevation, there is an off-centre painted Doric tetrastyle portico with a recessed porch that contains a part-glazed timber entrance door flanked by narrow windows. To the right, there is an advanced four-bay section with narrow full-height angle turrets that break the eaves. A two-storey, single-bay crenellated section is set at right angles to the far right. The rear of the building has some 21st-century additions.

The windows throughout the building are predominantly replacement timber sash and case, with eight panes on the ground and upper storeys. The principal rooms on the first floor feature 12-pane and 8-pane glazing, with fixed lights above that have a circular glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates.
