Description
The Walled Garden at Annanhill, located on Irvine Road in Kilmarnock, dates back to the early 19th century. This square garden is situated on a hillside and features canted corners with arch stepped walls. Each wall has an entrance door located at its center. The garden includes red brick hot walls topped with ashlar copes, some grey brick walls, and coursed ashlar walls at the canted corners, which are adorned with droved ashlar dressings and ashlar angle quoins with droved margins.
On the northwest elevation, there is a stone wall with an arch stepped raised center, which marks the previous site of a lean-to glasshouse and is pointed and harled. The flanking walls are made of coursed sandstone. There are remnants of a low wall built into the grass bank to the northwest, featuring saddleback ashlar copes.
The southwest elevation consists of stone walls with a central canted brick angle wall. It has a doorway that features ashlar long and short quoins and droved margins.
The southeast elevation has steps leading to a later central entrance, which is flanked by square red brick piers with a concrete lintel and a later timber door. The lower red brick walls are topped with flat stone copes and are flanked by canted ashlar walls, also with flat stone copes.
The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest with stone walls and a canted brick angle wall, along with a doorway featuring ashlar long and short quoins and droved margins.
Inside, the garden is laid out on two levels, divided into four sections. A central path leads to a flight of stone steps, with an additional path running around the perimeter of the garden. There are four rectangular lawns, each with formal flowerbeds. A platform where the lean-to glasshouse once stood is located to the northwest of the garden.
