Description

Loanhead Primary School, built between 1903 and 1905 to a design by R S Ingram, is a three-storey classical school building. It comprises two main elevations of 11 bays each, along with two elevations of 7 bays. The longer elevations feature a projecting central section of 9 bays, with the central three bays projecting further. The shorter elevations have a projecting central section of 3 bays, flanked by two bays on either side. The building is constructed of squared and snecked Ballochmyle stone, featuring a base course, banded rustication to the ground floor, a band course at the first floor, architraved first-floor windows with aprons, raised cills to the second-floor windows, an eaves course, projecting eaves, and triangular pediments surmounting each elevation. The southeast elevation, originally the main entrance, is a seven-bay elevation with regular window placement and a modern extension to the right. The southwest elevation is an 11-bay elevation with regular window placement, while the northwest elevation also has a seven-bay arrangement and a door with steps in the second bay from the right. The northeast elevation is an 11-bay elevation with regular window placement and a modern extension to the left. The windows are four-pane sash and case style, and the roof is slate with straight skews. The interior was not inspected in 2001.

A single-storey and attic janitor’s house is located nearby, with a three-bay front and a single-storey, seven-bay rear range. The janitor's house also features banded rustication to the ground floor, a first-floor band course, and an eaves course. The northwest (principal) elevation has a central boarded door, flanked by boarded windows, and two pane-less attic windows with pediment dormer gables. A blind shield is present on the gable-head, and a blind link in the centre of the rear elevation connects to the rear range. The southeast (rear) elevation has a central, three-bay pedimented projection with regular fenestration and single windows on the returns, alongside several other windows. The interior of the janitor’s house was not inspected in 2001.

A small coped boundary wall is accompanied by cast-iron railings with spear finials. The square gate piers originally had half-ball crowns, which are now missing, and there are green cast-iron gates. A range of open-fronted lean-to playshelters with cast-iron columns adjoins the southwest boundary wall, while enclosed shelters with three ventilation fleches to the roofline are located to the right.
