Description
6 Loanhead Street in Kilmarnock is a pair of attached Glasgow style villas designed by Gabriel Andrew of Andrew & Newlands around 1904. These two-storey buildings are constructed from coursed, polished red Ballochmyle ashlar and feature projecting bay windows. They have a deep base course and a projecting sill course on the upper storey, with skew gables and angled kneeler putts.
The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, includes ashlar steps flanked by a red sandstone wall with segmental copes. The arched entrance is supported by pilasters and features stone voussoirs and a prominent keystone. To the left of the entrance, there is a decorative plaque, with a shared plaque in the middle. The central timber door is recessed and has glazed panels on either side, topped by a 5-pane semi-circular fanlight. To the left, there is a double-height, 5-light canted bay window with a plain parapet and a recessed gablehead that has a central carved trefoil with moulding above and below. A single recessed rectangular window is located within a segmental-headed opening on the second bay of the second storey.
The northeast and southwest elevations feature a wallhead stack on the right and a gablet on the upper storey to the left, with the arrangement reversed on the southwest side.
The southeast elevation, which is not visible, was last seen in 2001. The building has replacement PVCu glazing that mimics the original look, with a fixed single lower light and an opening 6-pane upper hopper. The roof is piended with grey slate, featuring terracotta ridging tiles, lead flashing, and valleys. The rainwater goods are painted cast-iron, and there are tall red brick stacks supported by wrought-iron bars, with shaped ashlar bases and moulded ashlar neck copes topped with tall terracotta cans.
Inside, the reception rooms feature some plaster cornicing, skirting boards, panelled doors, timber balustrades, and a newel post.
