Description
2 Loanhead Street in Kilmarnock is a classical double villa built in the late 19th or early 20th century. This two-storey building features an asymmetric design with two and three bays, situated on a corner site and highlighted by a turreted bay. The exterior is constructed from coursed sandstone ashlar with dressed sandstone surrounds and includes a band course and bracketed eaves.
The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, has five bays. It is accessed by raised stone steps that have a stone balustrade. There are paired doors in the third and fourth bays, framed by a pilastered double door surround that supports a moulded cornice. Above the doors is a rectangular fanlight over a panelled timber door, with semi-glazed inner doors. A single window is located above on the first floor. The fifth bay features a double-height, three-light canted bay window with moulded panels, while the second bays have single windows. The first bay has a projecting pentagonal canted tower bay window.
The northeast elevation is regularly fenestrated across both storeys on the left and centre, with a return of the projecting two-storey tower bay on the right. The southeast elevation has a blind gable end that returns from the northeast elevation, and the rear of the northwest elevation is not visible. The southwest elevation also has a blind gabled end.
The windows of No. 1 are two-pane timber sash and case, while No. 2 has two-pane replacement PVCu windows. The main building has a piended grey slate roof, with a slightly octagonal grey slate conical roof on the tower and a three-sided grey slate roof over the bay window. The apex features pierced terracotta ridge tiles, with a terracotta ball finial on the bay and a wrought-iron finial on the tower roof. The building has painted cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers, and the gutter is concealed behind a low parapet that is ornately bracketed. There is a coursed ashlar stack at the gable with a shaped base course and neck cope, topped with a pair of terracotta cans.
Inside, some rooms have plaster cornicing, and the staircases feature timber balustrades and turned newel posts. The interior also includes skirting boards and panelled internal doors.
