Description
Hawkhill House is a late 18th century T-plan classical villa, with mid 19th century alterations, located within the grounds of the University of Dundee. The building is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, constructed from rubble and later covered with roughcast render.
The south elevation features a symmetrical three-bay arrangement with a sweeping staircase leading to the centre, which oversails the basement. There are decorative iron railings that rise to the doorway, which is topped by a decorative Y-tracery fanlight. Each gable end has two windows per storey, plus a central window in the attic.
At the rear, there is a slightly lower two-storey wing with a curving stone forestair and iron railings leading to a first-floor entrance at the northwest re-entrant angle, along with a single-storey lean-to outshot below. The northeast flank has a later piended dormer.
The villa features regular fenestration with timber four-pane sash and case windows and a steeply pitched slate roof. The skews are straight ashlar, and there are coped end stacks on the west and north elevations with octagonal clay cans, as well as a tall narrow stack at the northeast re-entrant.
Inside, the ground floor has a wide hall, and the original room layout is largely intact. There are six-panel timber doors, ornamental cornicing, and dado rails throughout. The first-floor hall has a round-arched reeded doorpiece with a fanlight and imitation keystone. An Adamesque chimneypiece is present in one of the first-floor rooms, and a curving stair leads to the attic level, featuring decorative iron balusters and a timber handrail.
