Description
32 Springfield is a Neo-Classical terrace built in Dundee between 1828 and 1851. The development was feued between 1830 and 1831 and constructed by 1846, with subsequent layout modifications that excluded Springfield House. The terrace forms a cul-de-sac stepped up from the sea, culminating in a semi-detached house to the north and short terraces along Perth Road.
The majority of the terrace (numbers 5-14 and 18-27) consists of two-storey, basemented houses, arranged in pairs, and stepped to create a visual effect. Each pair is characterised by a central tetrastyle Doric portico, originally complemented by wrought and cast-iron balconies (most of which are now absent). The windows are set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level, with first-floor cill courses. A main cornice and balustrade run along the terrace. Lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while later upper pairs sit on the same plane. Most pairs have pilaster strips defining their north ends, except for the recessed ones.
Numbers 15 and 16 are similarly styled but feature a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition is located to the west of number 15. Numbers 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico on the left-hand side; number 17 is linked to number 16 by a single-storey link.
The houses facing Perth Road (numbers 1-4 and 29-32) are symmetrical, eight-bay structures, with the bays at each end slightly advanced. They share the same Neo-Classical style as the rest of the terrace, including central tetrastyle porticos. Number 1 is angled to accommodate Perth Road and features a trabeated porch on the side. Number 32 includes a later hemispherical, pilastered bow rising through the ground and first floors. Number 3 has a later balustrade, and number 4 has a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack facing Springfield.
The corner houses (numbers 4 and 29) present two bays to Perth Road and three bays to Springfield, maintaining a similar style. Number 4 features a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack to Springfield, with a recently restored balustrade. Number 29 has a portico on the right, and a wallhead stack has been partially removed to make way for a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.
The windows are mostly later two-pane sash and case, with some original four-pane or twelve-pane windows, and some modern replacements. The roofs are low-pitched slate, with ridge stacks. The rear of the buildings are constructed of rubble. Some original plastered Ionic interiors remain. The original iron railings are now missing. The development was initially planned by an eminent Edinburgh architect.
