Description
27 Springfield, Dundee, comprises a Neo-classical cul-de-sac and terraces constructed between 1828 and 1851. The terraces were feued between 1830 and 1831, with construction continuing through 1846, and later modified to exclude Springfield House. The layout steps up from the sea and terminates with a semi-detached house to the north and short terraces at Perth Road.
Numbers 5 to 14 and 18 to 27 consist of two-storey, three-bay houses with basements (some of which have been infilled), arranged in stepped pairs. Each pair features a central tetrastyle Doric portico and wrought and cast-iron balconies (now largely absent). The windows are set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level, and have first-floor cill courses. A main cornice and balustrade run along the tops of the terraces. Lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while later upper pairs are on the same plane. All but the recessed pairs have north ends defined by pilaster strips.
Numbers 15 and 16 are similarly styled but incorporate a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition is located to the west of number 15. Numbers 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico on the left side, and are linked to number 16 by a single-storey section.
The elevations facing Perth Road consist of symmetrical, eight-bay houses, with bays at the ends slightly advanced. They share a similar style, including central tetrastyle porticos. Number 1 is angled to accommodate Perth Road and features a trabeated porch to the side. Number 32 has a Doric portico, cast-iron balcony, and a later hemispherical, pilastered bow rising through the ground and first floors. Number 3 has a mullioned and balustraded elevation, the balustrade having been recently restored.
The corner houses, two bays facing Perth Road and three bays facing Springfield, are built in a similar style. Number 4 features a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack towards Springfield, with a restored balustrade. Number 29 has a portico on the right side, and a wallhead stack that has been partly taken down to accommodate a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.
The windows are largely later two-pane sash and case, although some are four-pane, twelve-pane, or modern. The roofs are low-pitched and slate-covered, with ridge stacks. The rear of the buildings are constructed of rubble.
Some original plastered Ionic interiors remain. Original iron railings have been lost. Historic documents from 1830 and 1831 refer to the development being based on a plan by an "eminent architect" in Edinburgh.
