Description

26 Springfield, Dundee, comprises a neo-classical development constructed primarily in the 1820s and 1830s, with further building continuing to 1851. The terraces were originally feued between 1830 and 1831, with the intention of following a plan by an eminent Edinburgh architect, and were largely completed by 1846, although the layout was later modified to exclude Springfield House. The development is a cul-de-sac stepped up from the sea, terminating in a semi-detached house to the north and short terraces along Perth Road.

The majority of the properties, Nos 5-14 and 18-27, are two-storey, three-bay houses with a basement (some of which have been infilled). These houses are arranged in pairs, with each pair featuring a central tetrastyle Doric portico and wrought and cast-iron balconies (many of which are now absent). The windows are set within lugged architraves, corniced at ground level, with first-floor cill courses. A main cornice and balustrade run along the top of the buildings. The lower pairs are alternately advanced and recessed, while later upper pairs are on the same plane. Almost all of the recessed pairs have pilaster strips defining their north ends.

Nos 15 and 16 are similarly styled but have a full-length ground floor colonnade. A modern addition stands to the west of No 15. Nos 17 and 28 are single, three-bay houses with a portico on the left, and are linked to No 16 by a low-lying link.

The elevations facing Perth Road consist of Nos 1-4 and 29-32, each being symmetrical eight-bay structures, with the two bays at each end slightly advanced. These frontages also feature central tetrastyle porticos. No 1 is positioned at an angle to accommodate Perth Road, with a trabeated porch on its side. No 32 features a Doric portico, a cast-iron balcony, and a later hemispherical pilastered bow rising through the ground and first floors. No 3 has an altered, mullioned balustrade.

The corner houses, Nos 4 and 29, are two-bay facing Perth Road and three-bay facing Springfield. No 4 has a central portico and a panelled wallhead stack to Springfield, with a recently restored balustrade. No 29 has a portico on the right, with a wallhead stack that was partly removed to make way for a later slate mansard roof with consoled dormers.

The windows are mostly later two-pane sash and case windows, although some retain four or twelve panes, and a few are modern. The roofs are low-piended and slate-covered, with ridge stacks. The rear of the buildings are constructed from rubble. Some original plastered interiors with Ionic detailing remain. The original railings are now missing.
