Description
This is a late 19th-century commercial building, located at 6-14 Whitehall Street, Dundee. It stands four stories high with an attic, and originally contained shopfronts on the ground floor. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar with a grey slate Mansard roof.
The front elevation features a modillioned and corniced ground floor, an open-work parapet above, and a lintel band to the first floor and a cill band to the second floor. A consoled and modillioned main cornice sits above the second floor, with a fluted and dentilled lintel band and a corniced wallhead course surmounted by a balustraded parapet. The windows are a mix of single and canted architraved designs, with varying pilaster detailing and pediments: triangular and segmental on the first floor, colonette nook shafts and pilasters on the second, and shouldered with mannered volutes on the third. They are fitted with two-pane timber sash and case windows. A pilaster marks the corner with a swagged urn finial, and the ridge stacks have cornices and uniform cream cans.
A central, pilastered doorpiece features an open-pediment and a keystoned round-headed arch with sculpted decoration, though the shopfronts on either side are modern and out of character. The upper floors have three single windows flanked by canted windows on each floor from the first to the third. The attic windows consist of three keystoned round-headed dormers flanked by bipartite box dormers. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The statutory address is 6-12 (even numbers) Whitehall Street.
