Description
The Calendar Works, located on North Tay Street in Dundee, was designed by the Thomson Brothers and is dated 1881. This building is a three-storey, 21-by-4-bay structure made of rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. It features a steep pediment over the central five bays, which includes a small dated pedimented element in the tympanum. The building is adorned with quoins, skewputts, and ball finials. The ground floor of the west elevation has been altered, although the stair doors at each end remain intact. The first and second floors have large windows and the roof is covered with slate.
On the elevation facing Guthrie Street, there is a four-bay gable end that includes two oculi and a small sash and case window in the attic. The six-bay wing has five ground floor windows connected by a cill course and features a wide keystoned arched gateway with original wooden doors. The west gable has four bays and two oculi.
The south elevation, which faces the yard, is similar to the east elevation but has blocked oculi. Inside, the building has an iron frame with very high brick arched ceilings. There are two rows of iron columns on the ground and first floors, while the second floor is column-free and has a steel tie roof, with iron stairs located at each end.
At the rear of the West Marketgait building, there is a former cloth store known as 30 East Henderson's Wynd. This is a high single-storey range built of rubble, featuring blind windows on the west side and tall windows on the east side with original glazing. The north and south gables have oculi, skewputts, and ball finials, and the roof is also slate. There is a modern sliding door on the north side, and the interior has a steel tie roof.
