Description
Strathmore Lodge, now a Salvation Army hostel, was built in 1851 by Charles Edward as a girls' industrial school, with an associated ancillary building. The main building is two storeys and an attic, with an irregular plan, and the ancillary building is two storeys. The main building is constructed of pink sandstone rubble with cream ashlar dressings, and has a steeply pitched grey slate roof. Features include a base course, a band course to the first floor, ashlar-coped skewputts with moulded skewputts, and rendered axial stacks. Later metal-framed casement windows are present, along with keystoned round-headed windows in the attic gables of the front elevation, with quatrefoil openings above the roofspace.
The Ward Road elevation is three storeys and includes a central entrance tower with a broach spire and windows to the ground, first, and second floors. A door with a fanlight and canopy is on the right return, with a blocked window above and a window to the second floor. A three-bay gable is advanced to the left, with two windows to each of the ground and first floors, and a window in the attic. To the right, three bays are recessed, with three windows to each of the ground and first floors, and two later dormers.
The Court House Square elevation has a recessed six-bay section in the centre, with six windows to each of the ground and first floors, and a central wallhead gable with a window flanked by two later dormers. Two gables are advanced to the left and right, each with two windows to the ground and first floors and an attic window. The right return elevation features an advanced gable with a door and a window. To the left, three bays are recessed with three windows to each of the ground and first floors, and two later dormers.
The Marketgait elevation incorporates a later four-bay gable in the centre with various windows to each floor, as well as stair windows to the main elevation on the left and right. To the far left are three windows to the ground and first floors, with two later dormers under a flattened French roof. Four bays are advanced to the far right, with four windows to the ground and first floors, a wallhead gable with a window flanked by later dormers under a flattened French roof, and two windows and a dormer to the left return. A later single-storey addition is located to the centre right.
The ancillary building is situated at the corner of Court House Square and West Bell Street, and is constructed of snecked rubble with a piended grey slate roof and single, paired, and bipartite windows. Later additions to the West Bell Street elevation extend to Marketgait. The interior of the main building has not been inspected.
Two channelled ashlar gatepiers flank the Court House Square elevation, with low coped walls and later metal railings.
