Description
South Mill comprises two distinct flax mills located on Brown Street, Dundee. The original Old Mill dates to circa 1825, with alterations made in the 1860s. It is a two-storey, fourteen-bay, rubble-built structure with its west elevation facing Session Street and its east elevation facing a yard. A party wall, featuring skewputts and a flat-topped finial, divides the first five northern bays, designating them for hackling, separate from the spinning section. The ground floor showcases small, square windows, some blocked or boarded, with two altered to doors and others retaining their original glazing. A large cast-iron tie-plate is present. The first-floor windows are larger and feature altered glazing. The north gable also exhibits skewputts and a flat-topped finial. The east elevation has large windows with aprons at ground floor level; some still contain original multi-paned sash and case windows, while others are blocked. Doors were inserted during the 1860s and subsequent alterations. Inside, the ground floor is characterised by a single row of cast-iron columns that support a wooden beam. The first-floor hackling section has four timber pillars, while the spinning section has iron columns, along with a cast-iron spiral stair and a chute connecting to the attic of the New Mill.
The New Mill was begun between 1851 and 1857, and subsequently extended in 1864 and 1874-75. It is a three-storey structure with a basement and attic, measuring 33 bays by 3 bays, and is constructed of rubble. Three advanced sections are pedimented with acroteria, featuring segmental-headed windows and a cornice above the first floor. The 1864 pediment section originally held a large timber mullioned and transomed engine house window on the first floor, and a large entrance was inserted circa 1930, replacing the original steam engine. A door on the left reveals an original multi-paned wooden-framed window, formerly providing a view of the engine, which has since been altered to resemble a lodge. The north pediment is dated 1875 and resembles the others, but lacks a door or the larger window. The top cornice and north and south gables are three-bay wide, with three oculi and a segmental-headed window above the cornice. Ball finials are missing. The roof is a Mansard slate construction with two party walls concealed behind the pediments.
The west elevation mirrors the design, with an 1864 ground floor preparing shed, featuring an ornate cast-iron roof attached to the central section. Two pediments are present, one situated behind a circa 1930 brick lift shaft. All windows are original wooden-framed top-hoppers. The basement is subdivided into a flax store, with a section used as a pond. The mill is fully iron-framed, with two rows of cast-iron columns, bracketed for shafting. Brick arched ceilings and stone flagged floors complete the interior. The engine house possesses a fine internal, arched mullioned and transomed window, and a wooden panelled ceiling. A new floor has been installed. A gearing room located in the bay to the south retains wallboxes associated with a vertical shaft. Cast-iron gothic attic pendant bosses are displayed on two rows of clustered columns, and two stone stairs provide access to different levels.
