Description

St Mary Magdalene's Episcopal Church, located at 11 Blinshall Street in Dundee, was designed by Henry Coe and F P Goodwin and built between 1853 and 1854. This small Gothic church features a rubble-built structure with Caen stone dressings. It consists of a nave, a north aisle, and a chancel, all topped with slate roofs. The west gable has a pointed arched door with a four-light geometrical traceried window above it. At the apex, there is a two-arch gabled bellcote with a cross finial, and an octagonal angle turret with a facetted stone roof is located at the southwest corner. To the right, there is a shouldered arched door. The north aisle is buttressed and includes a two-light geometrical traceried window.

On the north elevation, there is a four-bay buttressed aisle with pointed two-light windows above basement tripartites and a lean-to roof. The chancel is lower and has two bays. The south elevation is unbuttressed and features larger windows in the nave. The east gable has a three-light chancel window and two blocked two-light side chapel windows with missing mullions. There is also a simple basement door.

Inside, the north aisle arcade is supported by octagonal piers. The nave has corbels that carry a timber scissor-brace roof. The chancel arch is corbelled and flanked by depressed arches that formerly led to the side chapel and organ, which are now blocked. The marble and tile reredos was created by William Butterfield, and the chancel floor features encaustic tiles, along with a wrought-iron altar rail. Traces of stencilling can be seen beneath the whitewash. The undercroft serves as a school and vestry, with stone piers replaced by cast-iron columns in 1878.
