57, 59, 61 West Port, Dundee

This is a three-storey and attic building dated 1823, located at 57, 59, 61 West Port, Dundee, and also encompassing 3 and 5 Johnston's Lane. The building was altered in 1864 to serve as a public house. It occupies an island gusset site, exhibiting a trapezoidal plan. The front facade, six bays wide, faces West Port and is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. The ground floor features pilaster strips, and an entablature runs along the front. Three-bay elevations extend to Hawkhill and Brook Street, also incorporating ground-floor pilasters. The rear of the building is plainer, built of rubble, and includes new steps and doors leading to Johnston’s Lane. The roof is piended and slate-covered, featuring a central timber Italianate clock turret dated 1864. The turret has a square plan, dwarf Doric pilasters, a clock face, and a low pyramidal lead roof, flanked by canted dormers. A central ridge stack is present, along with side wallhead stacks built of rubble. The windows are 12-pane sash and case windows set within margins. The building has been recently restored and the interior is modern.
