Description

Greyfriars Episcopal Church, located on St Cuthbert Street in Kirkcudbright, is primarily a reworking by Peter MacGregor Chalmers from 1919 to 1922 of a school that was converted from a parish church built in 1838. The site originally housed a late 15th century convent and incorporates a late 16th century laird's aisle from a previous parish church built in 1571, which serves as the chancel. The church has an irregular T-plan with scrolled skewputts on some gables. It is constructed of rubble with polished and squared dressings and features a slate roof.

The church has a simple nave and a transept to the west. The short off-centre barrel-vaulted chancel, formerly known as the Maclellan Aisle from the late 16th century, includes a simple liturgical 'east' window with a pointed head and two mullions. On the north wall, there is the Maclellan monument, dating from around 1635, which features paired columns topped with obelisk finials, flanking a semi-circular arch that holds a recumbent figure of Sir Thomas along with symbols of mortality and portrait heads in the spandrels. An inscribed panel is supported by consoles and also features two obelisk finials, along with an aedicule displaying the family arms and a winged cherub on the tympanum. Additionally, there is a window depicting the history of the church by Gordon Webster and a modern window at the liturgical 'west' created by a parishioner. A 15th century piscina from the convent has also been incorporated into the church.
