Description
Dildawn House is a large house dated 1813, with a probable 18th-century core in its northeastern wing. The house was significantly altered in 1852 with additions by the architect John Dobson. It is two storeys high with a basement.
The main elevation is of rubble construction and features four bays, with the central bays slightly projecting. A mid-19th century projecting porch has pilasters at the corners, and a Roman Doric porch with balustrading is centrally placed. Most windows are single-light sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, although some ground floor windows have a lower sash of plate glass. There is a moulded eaves cornice and a raised blocking course above the central bay.
The garden front includes a central three-window bow. A single-storey projecting bay, added in the later 19th century, is present to the left, featuring a tripartite window. All other windows match the glazing pattern of the main elevation. A full-height canted bay window (dated 1852) extends the entire height of the southwestern flank, with a cornice and blocking course. A two-storey L-shaped wing extends to the northeast and now houses the kitchens, but it may be part of an earlier structure.
The interior features a glazed vestibule door and mainly early to mid-19th century plasterwork and door cases. A notable late-19th century chimneypiece is also present.
A rectangular walled garden is enclosed by coped rubble walls. A pair of round-arched gateways, topped by a decorative corbelled castellated parapet, mark the garden's entry.
