Description

The Walled Garden at Dildawn House dates to 1813, as indicated by a rainwater head, and likely incorporates an 18th-century house in its north-east (kitchen) wing. The house was significantly extended and altered in 1852 by the architect John Dobson. It is two storeys with a basement.

The main elevation has four bays, with the centre bays slightly projected. A mid-19th century projecting single-storey porch features pilasters at the angles, and a projecting Roman Doric porch with balustrading is centrally placed. The walls are constructed of rubble. Most windows are single-light sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, although some ground floor windows have a lower sash of plate glass. A moulded eaves cornice and a raised blocking course are visible above the centre bay.

The garden front includes a central three-window bow. A single-storey projecting bay from the later 19th century is located to the left, featuring a tripartite window. All other windows are single-light sash windows with the typical glazing pattern. A full-height canted bay window (1852) with a cornice and blocking course is situated on the south-west flank. A two-storey L-shaped wing extends to the north-east and now contains kitchens, potentially forming part of an earlier house.

The interior features a good, glazed vestibule door. Plasterwork and door cases are predominantly from the earlier to mid-19th century, with one notable late-19th century fireplace.

The garden is enclosed by a coped rubble wall. A pair of round-arched gateways are topped with a decorative corbelled castellated parapet.
