Description

The building at 40 Stair Street, Kirkmaiden, is a two-story, three-bay house dating to around 1900. The west elevation is painted render, while the north and south elevations are painted brick. The building features broad channelled quoin strips and a bracketed eaves course.

The west-facing (Stair Street) elevation has a pedimented and Corinthian-pilastered doorpiece at the center, with a panelled door and fanlight. Canted windows with bracketed eaves courses and decorative cast-iron brattishing sit in the outer bays at ground floor level. Bipartite windows are located in the outer bays at the first floor, and a single-light window, with a bracketed cill, sits centrally at the first floor.

The north elevation has a window at the center of the ground floor and a window to the outer right at the first floor. The south elevation is not described.

The windows are sash and case, with plate glass glazing. The roof has painted coped skews that continue across the gableheads, along with skewblocks. Painted brick corniced gablehead stacks are present, and the roof is covered in grey slates with square terracotta cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible.

A low coped wall extends along the west side of the property, topped by decorative cast-iron railings. There are pairs of squat, corniced, pyramidal-capped square gatepiers and matching gates at both the north and south gateways.

The building does not appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1895 but is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1906.
