Description
Circa 1900, 36 and 38 Stair Street form a pair of almost identical two-storey and attic houses, originally designed as a grouping of one and two bays between each house. The west-facing elevation is finished with painted render, while the north and south elevations are of painted brick. Features include rusticated quoins, a decorative eaves course, architraved window surrounds with prominent lugging at the first floor level, and bracketed sills.
The west (Stair Street) elevation has doorpieces in the centre bays, with pilastered surrounds and a shared frieze, cornice, and locking course. Each doorway has a fanlight above the door. A window with a bracketed cornice is located in the bay to the right at ground floor level. A canted window with a half-piend roof is situated in the bay to the left at ground floor level. There is a window in each bay at the first floor. Dormer windows with piend roofs are positioned above the outer bays. The north elevation is gabled and blank.
The houses had grey slate roofs topped with octagonal cans. Original rainwater goods are cast iron, including corniced eaves guttering. The original windows were sash and case with four panes to each window, though modern glazing has been introduced to one ground floor window in number 36. Painted coped skews and brick gablehead stacks are also present.
A very low coped wall extends along the west side, above which decorative cast-iron railings are mounted. Square gatepiers with pyramidal caps support matching gates at the central gateways. The houses do not appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1894, but are shown on the 1906 map.
