Description

Circa 1900, 38 Stair Street is one of a virtually mirrored pair of two-storey and attic, two-bay houses. The west elevation is painted render; the north and south elevations are painted brick. The building features rusticated quoins, a billetted eaves course, architraved window surrounds with lugged details at the first floor, and bracketted cills.

The west-facing elevation, on Stair Street, has doorpieces in the central bays, with a pilastered doorway on the right (corresponding to number 36) and a shared frieze, cornice, and locking course linking the two houses. Each doorway has a fanlight. A window with a bracketted cornice is located in the bay to the right at ground floor, and a canted window with a half-piend roof is in the bay to the left at ground floor. There is a window in each bay at the first floor, and canted and piended dormer windows above the outer bays.

The north elevation is gabled and blank. The south elevation is not described in detail.

The windows are mostly sash and case with four panes per sash, although a modern window is present on the right at ground floor (number 36). The roof has painted coped skewes, painted brick gablehead stacks, grey slates, and octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, including corniced eaves guttering.

A low coped wall along the west side is topped with decorative cast-iron railings. Square, pyramidal-capped gatepiers support similarly detailed gates to the central gateways.

Numbers 36 and 38 Stair Street do not appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1894, but are shown on the map of 1906.
