Description
Shennanton House is a later 19th-century U-plan greenfield steading located in Shennanton, featuring Queen Anne architectural detailing. The building is constructed of rubble with some pinning, accented by contrasting red brock dressings, with courses reaching dado height at intervals. It has segmentally arched windows and a single and two-storey western linking range that includes two-storey bays at the center, topped with an M-gable. The design is nearly symmetrical, with a round arched brick-voussoired pend entrance at the center. There are sliding doors flanking the pend on both the east and west elevations. Above, a hayloft or granary is accessed by tall hayloft doors on each gable, with windows on the east elevation and three windows on each gable of the west elevation. Brick courses define the gableheads, and a stone bridge spans the gulley.
Single-storey bays extend to the north and south, featuring byres that retain concrete trevises. The north gable end has a keystoned oculus. The north and south ranges have single-storey piend and gabled roofs. A three-bay cottage is attached at right angles to the south (stable) range, and there is a machinery store adjoining the north range. The windows are predominantly small-pane, fixed, and top-hopper types, while the doors are boarded. The roof is covered with grey slates, raised in sections for ventilation, and includes skylights. The courtyard is diapered concrete with brick paths.
