Description
Craigcleuch House is a small-scale, two-storey neo-Jacobean mansion built around 1875, inspired by the work of William Burn from the 1840s. The building features symmetrical design elements, including gables topped with spike finials and a variety of mullioned and transomed windows. To the west, there is a low service court that shares similar architectural details. The exterior is constructed of stugged grey coursers with polished dressings and raised long and short worked quoins.
On the southeast elevation, steps lead up to a central open porch with a round-arched opening. Above this porch is a two-storey octagon with round-headed upper lights and a bell-cast roof finished with lead and topped by a weathervane finial. The outer bays of the building are advanced and gabled, featuring two-storey canted windows that are linked to the porch by arches at the ground level. The windows are plate-glass sash, and there are continuous band courses between the floors and at the eaves, along with a cornice and pierced balustrades. The building has end and axial stacks with grouped octagonal flues, and the roofs are covered with graded slates. The north elevation also includes canted windows in the outer bays, while the east flank is asymmetrical. The service court consists of two parallel two-bay ranges that connect to a screen wall to the west, which features a round-arched pend and a timber gate.
Inside, the house has a spacious central hall that is well-lit from above, with a staircase and rooms leading off from it. The interior includes some elaborate cornice plasterwork and marble chimney pieces, one of which in the drawing room is designed in a Gothic style.
