Description
Killumpha Tower is likely a 17th-century tower house, with later 18th and 19th-century additions that now form a farmhouse, and 1950s additions to the south elevation. The original structure is a small, square-plan, two-storey tower house. Gabled wings were added to the east (in the 18th century) and south (in the 19th century).
The north elevation of the tower is of painted rubble, while the remaining elevations are harled. It features crenellated pepperpot bartizans at all four angles, each with three recessed square panels and granite corbelling. Additions clasp the south and east elevations. There is a window at the centre of both floors on the north elevation, along with a blind square panel in the eaves. The west elevation also has a window at the centre of each floor, a small square window in the gablehead, and a blind square panel higher in the gablehead. A lower wing is adjoined to the right of the elevation.
The south elevation, the main entrance, has a gabled jamb adjoined to the tower on its right, with further wings adjoined to the left and right. A crenellated canted bipartite window is at ground floor level to the right of the gabled jamb, with windows to the left at ground floor and in the gablehead. A window at the first floor has a broad gabled dormerhead to its west return. A crenellated, canted porch, with a door to the southwest and flanking windows, is located in the re-entrant angle. Another crenellated canted bipartite window sits at ground floor level on the wing to the left, with a window above at first floor, featuring a broad gabled dormerhead. Also in the re-entrant angle to the east is a crenellated bowed porch with a round-arched door to the southeast and flanking windows. The wing to the right (dating from the 1950s) has two windows at ground floor and two at first floor, with a blank east return that is flat-roofed and has a crenellated blocking course.
The east elevation includes a lower gabled wing adjoined to the tower, and a flat-roofed wing. Two windows are present on both floors of the north side, with the first floor built up in brick. A further, lower, single-storey gabled wing is adjoined to the gabled wing, with two windows facing south, one facing north, and a blank east wall, except for a shed attached to the right. The west elevation has a gabled jamb adjoined to the tower and windows at ground and first floor levels on the north return, with a blank west wall and an adjoining greenhouse.
Some windows are sash and case, including those with 4 and 12 panes, and other windows with 4-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, although some modern glazing is also present. Harled, coped skews and harled gablehead stacks are found on the tower (to the east and west) and on the wings. The tower is roofed with purple slates, while the wings have some grey slates and some modern tiles. Octagonal cans are visible. Crenellated rubble walls surround the property.
