Description

St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church is a simple hall-type Free Church built in 1858-59, designed by the joiner-architect Peter McKie, who this is his only known work. The building was later used as a Roman Catholic Church and school, and a lower addition was constructed on the east gable in 1876. It closed in 1994 and is now used as a practice hall for Creetown Silver Band.

The church is built of rubble with granite ashlar margins and angle buttresses, rising to granite pinnacles. The west gable has a shallow, advanced central bay with granite quoins, featuring two lancet windows in each outer bay. The central doorway has double-leaf doors, with a blind lancet above. Three lancet windows light the nave. All windows have bold keystones and contain sash and case windows with 21-pane glazing. The roof is slate, with end skews and a cross finial to the west. A lower, single-story hall, featuring three brick-margined basket-arch casement windows, is attached to the south. A tall, octagonal stack rises from the hall’s southern end. The east gable arch is blind.
