Description
Broughton Mains is an 18th and 19th century farmhouse that stands two storeys high and consists of three main sections. The southern part features a mid-19th century, three-bay front, while the northern section includes two gabled wings: the eastern wing is the original late 18th century house, and the western wing dates from the mid-19th century.
The southern elevation is constructed of painted rubble with roughcast short quoins and margins. It has a central pilastered doorpiece with a recessed door and a fanlight above. On either side of the door are single light windows, and there are three sash and case windows with 4-pane glazing on the first floor. The end skews have block skewputts, and the corniced end stacks are topped with octagonal cans. The roof is covered with slate.
The northeastern wing, which was formerly the original farmhouse, has been incorporated as a service wing of the 19th century house. This lower two-storey, three-bay range is harled and features a central window that was originally a door. All windows are sash and case with 4-pane glazing, and the upper window lintels are aligned with the eaves. To the left, there is an exposed granite bay fragment and a red sandstone heraldic panel with the initials I M, dated 1628. This panel is reputed to have been reset from the Old Place of Mochrum, the home of the Murreys of Broughton and Cally. The roof is modern with concrete tiles, and there are tall coped end stacks.
The northwestern wing is made of painted rubble with raised margins, similar in detail to the southern elevation. It also has a modern concrete tile roof and tall corniced end stacks with octagonal cans. Both gables on the north side have single-storey rubble outshots.
