Description

The Walled Garden at Corsival House, located on Wigtown Road in Newton Stewart, dates from around 1830. It is a two-storey house with an attic and basement, featuring a symmetrical three-bay classical front. The walls are made of rubble with polished grey granite margins and rusticated quoins.

On the south elevation, there are steps with a simple iron balustrade leading to a Roman Doric doorpiece that is pedimented. This doorpiece contains double-leaf panelled doors and a fanlight. All the windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern.

To the east, there is a single-storey flat-roofed harled wing that was added in 1945. The rear of the house has paired flights of steps leading to the basement door and features a box dormer. The windows are regularly spaced, all with 12-pane sashes.

Polished granite band courses run over the basement and at the eaves, along with a cornice and a blocking course. The piend and platform roof are covered with good graded slates, and there are rusticated coped wallhead stacks.

To the north, there is a large walled garden enclosed by a rubble wall with sandstone coping. The boundary includes coped rubble walls and quadrant walls along the road. At the entrance, there is a pair of sturdy rusticated granite gatepiers with simple iron gates.
