Description

The Old Parish Church Graveyard is an irregularly shaped burial ground associated with the Old Parish Church (listed separately). The majority of the headstones date to the 19th century, although the earliest stone is dated 1697. The graveyard contains a variety of headstones and several column memorials.

The graveyard is enclosed by rubble walls and iron railings. At the southeastern edge are a pair of rubble gate piers; the pier on the right is missing its conical cap.

A school was marked north of the church on an Ordnance Survey map from 1848. The graveyard is part of the wider Lochinch Heritage Estate, which includes several other listed buildings and structures, such as Balker Farmhouse, Castle Kennedy, and Lochinch Castle. The site is referenced in historical maps and publications including J Ainslie's Wigton map of 1782, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland’s inventory of Galloway, and John Gifford’s guide to Dumfries and Galloway.
