Description

The Old Parish Church, built in 1770, was designed by Thomas Hall and possibly incorporates earlier fabric. It is now roofless and was formerly a parish church. The building is rectangular in plan, measuring 75 feet from northeast to southwest, and was made T-shaped by the later addition of a northwest “aisle,” which is now bricked off. The church is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings to the openings and quoins of the northwest aisle.

The southwest elevation features an iron gate leading to a round-arched entrance at ground level, with a round-arched opening above it. A birdcage bellcote sits at the apex of the roof. The southeast elevation showcases five round-arched openings, some of which are partially infilled, with a narrower central opening. Projecting keystones and imposts are visible. The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest with an iron gate to a round-arched entrance at ground level and a round-arched opening above. The northwest elevation presents a blank gable to the projecting aisle and remnants of a stack. Steps lead to an entrance in the right-reentrant angle, flanked by single rectangular windows.

The church interior is roofless and contains wall monuments.

The building is no longer in ecclesiastical use. The graveyard, gatepiers, gates, railings, and boundary wall are covered by a separate listing. A school was located to the north of the church, as indicated on the 1848 Ordnance Survey map. The Old Parish Church Graveyard with its gatepiers, gates, railings, and boundary walls is also the subject of a separate listing. Other structures within the wider Lochinch Heritage Estate include Balker Farmhouse, Balker Lodge, Black Loch Boathouse, Black Stables Cottage, Canal Cottage, Castle Kennedy, Castle Kennedy Bridge, Castle Kennedy gatepiers, gates and boundary walls, Castle Kennedy Lodge, Castle Kennedy Walled Garden, East Lodge, Garden Cottage, Ice House, Kennels, Kennel's House, Kitchen Garden, Lochinch Castle, Lochinch Stable Court, Main Lodge, Main Lodge gatepiers, gates and boundary walls, three sundials, and White Loch Boathouse.
