Description
Sanquhar House, located in Sanquhar, was designed by architect James Thomson of Dumfries and built between 1823 and 1824. This two-storey, three-bay former manse features a basement that opens to the garden on the west side. The exterior is finished in painted stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings.
On the south elevation, the inner bay is slightly advanced and includes a doorway with a semi-circular fanlight and narrow sidelights, framed by a wide doorpiece supported by two elongated columns. The windows are fitted with plate glass sashes. The building has a set-off at the base, a continuous band between the floors, and a cornice. The roof extends over a low blocking course, except above the entrance bay, and features two symmetrically placed groups of diamond flues. The roof is a combination of piended and platform styles, covered with graded slates.
At the rear, there are low wings. To the west of the house, there is a quadrangular walled garden, enclosed by rubble-built walls that are ashlar-coped and sweep upwards towards the north. The garden has gates on three walls, and the east wall is buttressed.
