Description

The Market Office at 48-50 Whitesands in Dumfries dates from around 1900 and is a two-storey building with a symmetrical five-bay elevation facing Whitesands. To the northeast, there is a large, detached, rectangular three-storey warehouse block with seven bays. Both structures are constructed from stugged red ashlar with polished dressings and feature piended roofs covered with graded slates.

The office has round-headed openings on the ground floor and square-headed windows on the first floor. The central doorway, which has a consoled cornice, is flanked by outer bays that are now blocked, while the central bay features a pediment. The intermediate bays contain paired ground floor windows and bipartite first floor windows. All windows are plate glass sashes. The building has blocked eaves, a corniced end stack, and ornamental ridging tiles.

The warehouse has a wide entrance in the two-bay southwest end wall, and all windows are small-paned with projecting cills and louvred upper lights.
