Description
The Old Bridge in Tongland was built in 1737 and features a two-arch stone design that spans the River Dee, marking the boundary between the parishes of Tongland and Kirkcudbright. The bridge has two segmental arches with an approximate total span of 100 feet, including a central pier. V-cutwater buttresses are located on both sides of the arches, which may have been partially rebuilt or had their quoin-stones recut. The bridge is constructed with narrow rubble voussoirs, a rubble soffit, and rubble abutments. The dressed stone is used for the cutwaters and the base of the central pier. The parapets, which have been rebuilt, now cantilever out to provide footpaths on each side. The original width of the carriageway was approximately 10 feet. The parapet features sandstone coping and slightly splayed embrasures that end in a pyramidal capstone.
