Description
Tongland Dam, part of the Galloway Hydroelectric Power Scheme, was designed by James Williamson with consulting engineers Sir Alexander Gibb and Merz and McLellan, and constructed by John Howard and Co. in 1934, with later additions including screens. The dam features a curved design with multiple radii, incorporating both arched and gravity sections. It is constructed from concrete panels topped with concrete copes above a cornice.
To the left (west) is a single control tower supported by corbel brackets on the downstream face (south), which has a round arched opening and a single round arched window above. To the right (east) of the centre are large free roller gates, with a chamfered square-plan control tower positioned above them. Curved section buttresses are located between the gates. The dam also includes a fish-ladder made up of sequential concrete pools and a fixed spillway at the far right in the gravity section, flanked by concrete wave walls and a shoulder-arched walkway above.
