Description
Tongland Bridge was built between 1804 and 1808 and is often attributed to Thomas Telford, although there is evidence that Alexander Naysmith contributed to the design. The bridge features a main segmental central arch with an approximate span of 110 feet, flanked by round full-height buttress towers, each with three narrow pointed arches on either side.
The structure is made of bull-faced granite masonry, with the arches showcasing boldly rusticated voussoirs. It has a corbelled embattled parapet, and the buttresses serve as pedestrian refuges, with splayed abutments and parapets.
