Description
This building, dating from after 1872, comprises a former school and an adjoining schoolhouse. It is an elongated H-plan, with the school forming a single-story section adjoined to the west of the two-story house. The school is constructed of rubble with a lightly painted finish, while the house has exposed rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings, stugged rybats and quoins, with finely droved margin drafts—these margins are chamfered and stopped before the cill. Later brick additions are present.
The south elevation shows the school to the left, with a gable advanced. It features a bipartite window and a blind gun loop in the gablehead. A lean-to brick porch extends to the east return, with a door facing south. The central section of the school has four evenly spaced bipartite windows, with a gabled brick porch positioned between the centre windows, containing a door facing west and a window facing south. The house is to the right, again with a gable advanced. It has a window on both floors facing south, and a bipartite window at ground floor and a window with a gabled dormerhead at first floor on its east return. A wallhead stack is located on the west return of the house. A modern door is positioned on the right.
The east elevation shows an L-plan (with the re-entrant elevations visible on the left, as seen from the south). A gable is advanced on the right, with windows on both floors and to the right on the first floor.
The north elevation is divided between the house on the left and school on the centre and right. The house has a window on the left at ground floor, and a gable with windows on both floors to the left. A half-piended single-story wing extends from the gable at ground floor to the right; it has a door and window facing east, a glazed door and a slapped window facing north, and a slapped window and a blocked door to the far right facing west. The school section has three widely-spaced windows to the central section, a small window to the outer right, and a wallhead stack between the centre and right windows. A gable mark indicates the former location of a porch between the left and centre windows, with a blocked door to the left of the centre window. A gable advanced to the right has a bipartite window to the north. A garage door is slapped at centre, with a door to the right and a wallhead stack to the left on its east return.
The west elevation presents four bays, with bipartite windows in the central bays and single-light windows in the outer bays. A rubble wall is adjoined to the left.
The windows are mostly modern, with a small-pane pattern. Three sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing are found on the north elevation of the school. The roofs are covered with small grey slates and feature ashlar coped skews, ashlar dressed coped stacks—present on the gablehead to the east and north of the house, along the ridge between the house and school, and with a shouldered wallhead—and gabled ventilators.
The site is enclosed by rubble walls. A pair of ashlar, chamfered, pyramidal-capped square gatepiers mark the entrance to the school from the south wall, accompanied by a plain iron gate.
