Description
The stables at Mabie House date from around 1800 and consist of four ranges built around a quadrangular courtyard, primarily single storey with lofts. The north range is partly used for domestic purposes. The structure is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, mostly painted.
The symmetrical seven-bay north front features a crenellated two-storey central tower that has a blocked pend, which was originally segmental-arched but is now square-headed, with a round-headed window above. The courtyard side has pointed windows, while the north front has a square obelisk finial on a square plinth, which may have once housed a clock. The openings below consist of square-headed doors and windows, along with cusped-headed slit loft ventilators. The building has an eaves course and a cornice.
The south range also includes a two-storey central tower, which has a pyramidal roof topped with a ball finial. The low east and west ranges have mostly square-headed openings, and the courtyard is accessed from the east. All roofs are covered with graded slates.
