Description

The monument to the Ninth Earl of Galloway, located on Victoria Street in Newton Stewart, was designed by architect Richard Park in 1875. This octagonal Gothic structure features four decreasing stages. It is constructed of polished ashlar with colonnettes made of finely dressed pink granite.

The first stage includes buttresses that flank inscribed panels, each surrounded by gablet pointed arches. These buttresses support seated lions that bear shields and lances. The second stage consists of an octagonal ashlar drum topped with a cornice, which supports a tall shaft adorned with four engaged colonnettes positioned at the compass points. Above this, there is an elaborate octagonal frieze featuring projecting gargoyles. The fourth stage culminates in a spirelet with miniature lucarnes and a cross finial at the apex.
