Description
The Kirtle New Bridge, located on the former route of the A74 near Kirtlebridge, is a road bridge likely built around 1820, probably by Thomas Telford. It consists of a single segmental arch, approximately 17 metres in span, crossing the Kirtle Water. The original construction utilized red ashlar, featuring rusticated voussoirs. In 1954, the bridge was widened to the north and south, and the parapets were rebuilt. The arch itself is now reinforced concrete, faced with ashlar. The bridge has a straight roadway and parapets, with the southern parapet curving at its approaches. The bridge is also situated within the parish of Middlebie and stands on the edge of Kirtlebridge Village.
