Description

Langshaw House is an irregular country house, built in several phases from the mid-18th century onwards. The earliest part is a two-storey, three-bay house originally facing east, although it has been altered. A south-facing addition, also two storeys and three bays, was added in 1787, converting the original house to a T-plan. Further west additions were made in 1901, creating a plain, three-gabled north elevation and connecting to the original house. A billiard room was added in 1907, adjoining the 1787 range.

The original house is rendered with red ashlar dressings. It features an architraved and pedimented central doorway, with a single window above. The outer bays were altered in the early 20th century, adding pediments above the wallhead. A cornice and eaves course are present.

The 1787 range has narrow, unequal bays, with a doorway near the centre (containing non-original doors) behind a columned and pedimented porch. It also has an eaves/lintel band and a cornice. A single bay projects from the east flank with an elliptical panel within its pedimented gable.

The billiard room comprises two bays with a rooflight, apex ventilator, and a finialed gable.

All additions are constructed of red ashlar with corniced stacks, and all roofs are slated. The interior has been altered for conversion to a nursing home around 1984.

To the east of the house is a courtyard with outbuildings and stables. Historic Environment Scotland records that NMRS has an index to Peddie and Kinnear drawings relating to the property, incorrectly named “Larigshaw” in Dumfriesshire.
