Description
Weaver's Cottages at Newbank Mill is a woollen mill complex built around 1804. The site includes a mill house to the north, two main detached ranges of mill buildings arranged around a courtyard, and a further range of weavers' cottages to the south.
The mill house is a two-storey, three-bay structure made of rubble with raised margins. It features a modern rendered brick gabled porch added around 1980 at the center. The windows are single light with well-made replaced timber sash and case windows, featuring 12-pane glazing. There is a rear wing that includes a sympathetic modern two-storey rendered brick addition.
To the northeast, the mill buildings consist of an L-plan two-storey spinning mill with a single-storey dye house to the south. Fragments of machinery are still present. The buildings are constructed of rubble with slate roofs, with the dye house roof being reslated around 1980. There are two wheelpits; the one at the northeast angle of the spinning mill is original, although the wheel has been removed. The wheelpit and wheel to the east are mid-20th century additions that were used to drive a generator. The dye house is single-storey, rubble-built, and features wallhead stacks.
Opposite the spinning mill, there is a detached two-storey weaving shed, also built of rubble with a slate roof, which is set into the rising ground. The floor levels have been altered to accommodate a later grain silo.
To the south of the complex, there is a row of single-storey weavers' cottages made of rubble and slate.
