Description
1-4 Maidenbower in Dumfries is an earlier 19th century rectangular-plan house that originally had two storeys and three bays, facing north. In the late 19th century, it was expanded to double its size with the addition of a south-facing block, now forming an H-plan layout. The building is currently divided into four flats.
The original house features snecked and squared red rubble, while the additions are made of red ashlar with painted dressings. The north elevation displays simplified Classical ornamentation, with all openings having pediments, acroteria, and brackets. A central full-height shallow panel projection houses a panelled door with a fanlight, and there is a cornice above the first-floor window. The design includes angle pilaster strips, a cornice, and a slate roof.
The addition has a three-bay south elevation with an off-centre door and steps leading to an upper door on the east side. The building has end stacks and piended roofs covered with graded slates.
