Cattle Market, New Market Street, Castle Douglas

The Cattle Market on New Market Street in Castle Douglas was built around 1900 and features an octagonal mart hall constructed from polychrome cream brick and red sandstone. The building has brick walls with sandstone quoins and surrounds. The entrance is round-arched and includes double-leaf doors with a semi-circular fanlight above. Oculi flank the doors, each with 4-pane windows. Heavy sandstone corbels are present at the eaves, and the roof is facetted slate with skylights and triangular ventilators, topped by a modern fleche at the apex.

Inside, the market hall remains largely unaltered. The walls are lined with timber, and there is timber stepped seating. A balustraded ring with ball finials is present at the gateposts. The roof features an intricate construction with metal tie rods radiating from a central dropped lantern, which is suspended from a dropped ceiling, along with metal rafters and ties.
