Description

The Portpatrick Hotel, built in 1905 by James Kennedy Hunter with extensive additions by J M Dick Peddie in 1906-1907, is a 2-storey building with a basement and attic, featuring a 3-storey irregular plan in a baronial style. It is characterized by conical-roofed round towers and a harled exterior with a moulded string course.

The northwest entrance elevation is asymmetrical with 12 bays, grouped into 5 and 7. It features an elaborate plasterwork corniced doorpiece at the main entrance, which has recessed 7 bays and 2-leaf timber and glass doors. To the right, there is a tall stair bay that breaks the eaves, and an advanced lower wing set at right angles to the left. The outer left has 5 advanced bays, and the entrance stair bay is also advanced and breaks the eaves at the center. The elevation includes a variety of single, bipartite, and tripartite dormers.

The northeast elevation has 4 bays with a 3-stage conical capped tower on the outer left and bipartite dormers. The southeast rear elevation consists of 13 bays, featuring conical capped 3-stage towers on the outer left and right, along with an advanced flat-roofed section to the outer left and both single and bipartite dormers. The southwest elevation has 5 bays and a stair tower on the outer right, with single dormers in the attic.

The hotel predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although many have been replaced. The roof is covered with grey slate, and it has coped wallheads and pitch stacks with circular cans.

Inside, the original decorative scheme remains largely intact, including timber panelling, decorative timber newels on the stairposts, and a vaulted corridor that links the dining and drawing room on the ground floor.

The boundary walls and gatepiers surrounding the site are a combination of rubble, harl, and brick, with circular-plan conical capped gatepiers.
