Description

This is a single segmental-span bridge built circa 1801 by William Stewart, a mason. The bridge is constructed of rubble with recessed ashlar arch rings. It has a ramped parapet with ashlar coping. The eastern approach is widely splayed, featuring a pyramidal cap to the square terminal pier of the north parapet, while the south parapet continues south as a dyke. The bridge was widened to the south. It forms a group of architectural interest with the George Hotel. References to the bridge can be found in the Minutes of Commissioners of Supply, held in the Ewart Library.
